Using Self-Modelling to help children build positive habits
The Power of Self-Modelling in Parenting: Helping Children Build Positive Habits
Dear moms,
About 15 years ago, I attended an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) course, where I learned the power of visualization to help people make positive changes, like losing weight or quitting smoking. I thought this was such an effective, resistant-free method. Now, as a parent, I realized how this technique help parents parent in a resistant-free way.
What is Self-Modelling?
Self-modelling is a technique where children visualize themselves performing positive behaviors, like cleaning up toys or following instructions. It's not just about telling them what to do—it’s about showing them how it looks, so they can see themselves succeeding.
In video self-modelling (VSM) , children watch videos of themselves performing these behaviors successfully, making it more likely they’ll repeat the actions in real life. This method has been used with great success, especially with children on the autism spectrum, and it’s something I wanted to bring to Bespoke Children Books (BCB).
How We Use Self-Modelling at BCB
At BCB, we use personalized books featuring your child's name and face, showing them acting kindly, helping, or following rules, or even for toilet training. By seeing themselves succeed in these situations, they begin to believe they can do it in real life, and internalize positive behaviors.
Why I’m Passionate About This Method
Self-modelling is an incredibly powerful and resistant-free tool for parents. It helps children visualize and embrace positive habits while reducing the stress and repetition that often comes with parenting. At BCB, we’re passionate about helping children—and parents—one picture at a time.
Warmly,
Christina
